New boy Jason Davidson has his sights set on becoming the first serving Huddersfield Town player to feature in a World Cup finals since Ray Wilson.

The 1966 winner was with Everton when he helped England beat West Germany 4-2 at Wembley.

But four years earlier, he featured in all four England games in Chile, when Walter Winterbottom’s side went out in the quarter-finals.

Now fellow left-back Davidson wants to help Australia make the 2018 tournament in Russia.

The 24-year-old former West Bromwich Albion player was an unused substitute when the Socceroos started their qualification campaign with a 2-1 win in Kyrgyzstan last month.

Next up for Ange Postecoglou’s side is a home clash with Bangladesh and a trip to Tajikistan in September.

Jordan are also in Australia’s initial qualification group, with games going on until March.

The eight group winners and best four runners-up move into the next qualification phase.

The ultimate aim is to become the fifth Aussie team to make the finals (after those in 1974, 2006, 2010 and 2014).

Davidson, capped 18 times, hopes he can claim a regular berth at Town and therefore boost his international chances.

“Luckily I have a good relationship with the coach,” he said.

“While I didn’t get a lot of game time with West Brom last season, I was a regular in the Australian squad.

“I want that to stay the case, and playing well for Huddersfield will help me make that happen.

“We desperately want to make the finals, and I think we have a good crop of players coming through.

“It will take us a bit of time to find our feet, but winning the Asian Cup earlier this year was a big boost for us.”
