JAMIE JOBARTEH bagged a hat trick to maintain Newsome WMC's challenge for a first Huddersfield and District League Division I title.

On a heavy pitch, Jobarteh's three-goal effort and one from Luke Gibson brought a fine 4-1 win over Honley at Neiley Playing Fields.

The visitors started brightly with Luke Gibson and Adam Laverick running at the Honley full-backs at every opportunity.

Newsome's opener came from the left, Jobarteh running beyond Gibson to lob the keeper from a tight angle.

Newsome pressed for a second to take into the interval, but a breakaway from the quick Honley front line enabled them to go in level.

The second half was much the same as the first, Newsome creating a lot of chances and the Honley defence holding firm.

But in the 80th minute the visitors got the goal they had been looking for, a slide-rule pass by captain Dane Thornton split the Honley defence and Jobarteh just got to the ball before the Honley keeper and was able to steer the ball into the net.

Newsome sealed the points in the dying minutes with winger Gibson capping off a great performance by beating three defenders and the keeper to slot the ball into an empty net.

Then Jobarteh completed his hat trick by lobbing home from close range.

Fenay Bridge were the League's highest scorers on the day, netting 10 against Ireti Athletic, with Wheatley leading the way with five.

* Two District League matches on Saturday were abandoned because of injuries to players, who needed hospital treatment.
