Mark Robins says he’s delighted with the way Joe Lolley is adapting to his new surroundings.

Town splashed out £300,000 on the Kidderminster Harriers frontman during last month’s transfer window.

The 21-year-old, who was playing in the Midland Combination this time last year, made his Championship debut from the bench at Leeds.

And he was an unused substitute for the games against Bournemouth, Wigan and Birmingham, where Town won 2-1 on Saturday.

Lolley, who netted 11 times for Kidderminster after joining them in the summer, had a run-out with Town Under 21s in Monday’s 2-0 win at Leeds.

Now he’s hoping to feature when Sheffield Wednesday visit on Saturday in the first of two big John Smith’s derbies (it’s Barnsley seven days later).

“Joe’s coming along very nicely, and while he is still at the learning stage, he will certainly play for us again this season,” said Robins.

“I think we were all encouraged by his cameo appearance at Leeds, when he showed many of the attributes which attracted us.

“He was lively once again in the Under 21s on Monday, and while there are still plenty of areas to work on, I’m keen to get him on the pitch in a first-team match.

“But let’s not forget he has come a long way in a short time, and he is still acclimatising.

“He’s not used to training full-time at high intensity, but he’s handled what we’ve asked of him pretty well.

“I had hoped to bring him on last Saturday, because he is a former Birmingham junior and would have relished the chance to face them.

“But I have to be mindful of getting results, and I just thought Sean Scannell was the right option to come off the bench.

“He has that bit of extra know-how and we needed to retain the ball high up the pitch.

“That said, Joe will still have benefited from looking and learning.”
