Nick Colgan believes Joe Murphy would be a top Huddersfield Town acquisition.

The John Smith’s Stadium club remain keen on the out-of-contract Coventry stopper.

And Colgan, freshly appointed as first-team goalkeeping coach, says the 32-year-old would provide top competition for Alex Smithies.

Murphy came in for Colgan to make the first of his two Republic of Ireland appearances in the 2-2 draw with Turkey in Dublin in September 2003.

And Colgan, who has been promoted from academy goalkeeping coach, said: “As I understand it, the deal isn’t done and dusted yet, but if it happens, then great.

“Joe and I go back a long way, we have been in a dozen or so international squads together, and he is a very good keeper.

“You don’t play more than 500 games (Murphy has also been at Tranmere, West Brom, Walsall, Sunderland and Scunthorpe) without being good at the job.”

Town are looking to replace 42-year-old Ian Bennett, who could yet take Colgan’s old job with the academy.

And Colgan continued: “Benno has been brilliant for the club, and as well as playing well when called upon, he has been a massive help to Alex.

“But I think he would be the first to say that we probably need a younger man to provide competition for Alex, who in my opinion, is an excellent keeper.

“Whether or not that is Joe Murphy remains to be seen.”

Town will send a team to Brighouse Town for a friendly in Friday, July 11.
