Joel Lynch is the winner of the Examiner Huddersfield Town Player of the Month for January.

We asked you to cast your votes for three nominees on our Twitter and Facebook pages based on your ratings across the month and you have selected the returning central defender ahead of midfielder Jacob Butterfield, who was part of the voting for a third month in succession, and striker Nahki Wells.

Lynch and Wells both earned ratings of 8.2 in the 3-1 home win over Watford, with Butterfield coming in at 8 and that was to become something of a recurring theme, with the trio taking the top three ratings after the 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough.

But the 27-year-old achieved the joint-top rating from the 1-0 win at Wigan Athletic before ending the month as the best of a bad bunch in the 2-1 defeat to Leeds United as he secured an average score of 6.8 per game.

Lynch was absent for the FA Cup home reverse to Reading and the Town defence struggled as a result without him as any hopes of a cup run came to a premature halt.

And the fact he secured some 74% of the vote ahead of the consistent Butterfield (21%) and hotshot Wells (5%) underlines his increased worth to this Town side.

His January highlight came in the win over Watford when he netted only his second goal of the season with an exquisite strike to put the seal on a 3-1 success.

December winner Jonathan Hogg started the month with a red card against Reading and was injured in the first half against Middlesbrough, so was unable to try and defend his crown.

Town writer Doug Thomson said: "He scored a stunning goal to help clinch a welcome 3-1 win over Watford.

"But Lynch, who stung the Hornets with an overhead kick, also excelled in the centre of defence.

"And the former Brighton and Hove Albion and Nottingham Forest man played a key role when Town finally ended their long wait for an away win, and kept a clean sheet to boot, at Wigan Athletic.

"Calm and composed both on the ground and in the air, the 27-year-old brings plenty of experience to the backline.

"Lynch also works well alongside skipper Mark Hudson."

Thank you to everyone who voted!
