Chris Powell will be happy to see Jon Stead again when his Huddersfield Town side take on Notts County in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

The 32-year-old striker was among the squad the gaffer inherited when he was appointed at the John Smith’s Stadium last September.

The Huddersfield-born Town academy product made four appearances for Powell – and scored the first goal of his reign – before being loaned to Bradford City.

He was a star of the Bantams’ run to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, scoring in all five rounds before the sixth.

Stead, whose second stint at Town lasted two years, signed for League II Notts in July.

“It will be a tough tie,” said Powell, who will aim to pilot Town into the second round for the seventh time in 10 seasons (their only two first-round defeats in the last nine were at Blackpool, 1-0 in 2007, and at Preston North End, 2-0 in 2012.)

“They have signed a lot of players this summer, including Steady, who scored my first goals as Town manager at home to Middlesbrough, and it will be good to see him again.”

Stead’s other Town goal last season (he notched 11 for Bradford) came in the 5-3 extra time Capital One Cup first-round win at Chesterfield.

The competition has existed since 1960-61.

Town’s best run was to the semi-finals in 1967-68, when they were beaten 6-3 over two legs by Arsenal.

Notts have three times made the quarters, in 1963-64, 1972-73 and 1975-76.

There have been 33 league and cup meetings between the pair down the years, including a two-legged League Cup second-round clash in 1999-2000, when Town were 4-3 aggregate winners.

Town have 15 wins and Notts 11, their last in Huddersfield coming in 1989-90, when they were 2-1 Division III (now League I) winners.

The latest clash will be played to a finish, with extra time and penalties if necessary.

The second-round draw takes place live on Sky Sports News on Thursday after the Doncaster Rovers v Leeds United tie.
