Former Huddersfield Town striker Jordan Rhodes is the subject of a reported £14m bid from Championship big spenders Middlesbrough, who are looking to prise the 25-year-old away from Blackburn Rovers.

And that news will be of interest to Town fans given that the club are due 20% of any profit made on the hitman , who has plundered a stunning 73 goals in 134 games for the Ewood Park outfit.

Boro have already splashed the cash this summer to bring in Stewart Downing for an initial £5.5m fee, which could rise to £7m if they are promoted, but chairman Steve Gibson is backing manager Aitor Karanka once more with what would be a Championship record move for Rhodes.

If a move at the mooted fee for Rhodes does go ahead, Town will be entitled to £1.2m as Blackburn would have accrued a further £6m on top of the £8m they paid to sign the prolific frontman back in 2012.

Rhodes was a target for Boro back in January, with Karanka keen to draft in the proven Championship striker for his side's promotion push - which ultimately came undone in the play-off final against Norwich City - but was unable to agree a loan deal.

Rhodes has attracted plenty of interest from Championship clubs

But Boro have gone back in for him as they look to avoid missing out on the Premier League riches once again, although it is unclear whether they will pay the entirety of the fee up front.

The promotion chasers are keen to pay an initial £9m with performance-related add-ons while Rovers owners Venkys would prefer the sum in full in a deal which would eclipse Ross McCormack's £11m switch from Leeds United to Fulham last year.

And that makes it unclear how the deal would be structured from a Town perspective, with several installments the likeliest outcome if Rovers accept Boro's proposal of a down payment.

Rhodes scored 87 goals across three seasons at Town after arriving from Ipswich Town in a £400,000 deal back in 2009.
