HOLMFIRTH Town are looking forward to the new football season after winning promotion from Division IV of the District League and setting up a junior section.

The creation of the club a year ago marked a return to football for former Town director and chief executive Andrew Watson, who departed the Galpharm in November 2008.

Alongside fellow former Town players Rob Edwards and Ian Wadsworth, he was instrumental in getting the project off the ground.

The trio are still at the heart of the ambitious club, who play on Holmfirth High School’s ‘Little Wembley’ pitch.

And they have been joined by Mick Reid, whose widespread coaching experience includes working with the Town academy and AFC Emley.

“We were inconsistent at the start of last season, but we went the last 16 matches unbeaten and won 14 of them,” explained Watson.

“We began with two adult teams, but a junior section was always a big part of the plan, and this time we will have an Under 9 side.

“Ian Wadsworth, my old Town teammate and still a good friend, will chair the junior section and in time, we will have sides at every age group.

“All of our positions are voluntary, and we have made a really exciting appointment in Mick Reid, who will be head of youth.

“Mick is already well qualified, Ian and I have just done our FA badge and Rob Edwards will do so in August, along with one of our first teamers, Neil Croucher, who will manage the Under 9s.

“Our first-team manager Josh Mallinson is also qualified while Ian’s wife Hanny is secretary and treasurer of the junior section, so we have a strong team behind the club.
