SAVILE TOWN FC are making a big impact on football in the Dewsbury area – and have just achieved Charter Standard.

And the Police Community Support Group are so impressed by the work being done at the club that they have presented them with a special trophy to be called the Kirklees Challenge Trophy.

Community Support Officer Annette Still explained: “After attending the club’s presentation evening in May this year, PC Aziz and I were so impressed by the effort and commitment of the club volunteers to get youngsters interested in sport that we decided to give them a special trophy to recognise the good work.”

The club will now have a meeting to decide how to use the trophy.

“It will probably go to a player who has given outstanding service to the club,” said chairman Iftikar Ifrahim, whose company Highgate Beds (Dewsbury) are sponsors.

Savile Town had a club back in 1977, but only recently juniors.

Two years ago a team was entered the Junior League (Under 15s) as Savile Youth. Initially, the team found it difficult, but they improved and, more importantly, enthusiasm grew. During the season more age groups began training and four more teams (Under 8s, 9s, 10s and 11s) were added.

The process for attaining the FA’s Charter Standard was started and, after a lot of hard work, with the club keen to do things the right way, this has now been achieved.
