Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes his side should have made more of their first half chances against Huddersfield Town.

The Reds won the inaugural Shankly Trophy by beating Town 2-0, but the second goal came courtesy of a late penalty from Alberto Moreno.

Klopp's men went into half time one goal to the good, courtesy of a fine Marko Grujic finish, but Philippe Coutinho missed a penalty, Liverpool had a goal disallowed for a foul on Joel Coleman and several other chances were spurned by the men in red.

"In the first half we should have scored more - maybe we [did] score more with the second goal disallowed and then we missed a penalty and had a few chances," said the Liverpool manager after the final whistle.

"We played some wonderful combinations so it was really good.

"But I was not too happy with the first 20 minutes, with the concentration level we showed. It's not bad, of course not: when you are 1-0 in the lead against a Championship side then it's not bad.

"But if we trust a little too much in our skills, it's not the best decision to make."

Klopp was forced to play 18-year-old Academy goalkeeper Shamal George up front in the second half after Lucas limped off with an injury.

When Martin Cranie conceded the second penalty of the evening late on, there was pressure from the fans for the teenager to be given the chance to mark his debut with the rarest of goals.

But the manager felt Moreno was correct to take responsibility himself, saying to do otherwise would have been disrespectful.

Added Klopp: "Even though it doesn't look like it all the time, for us these games are quite serious, so we don't want to make a joke of it!

"It's nice for the crowd but in no game in the world should we make funny decisions. If it's 4-0, 5-0, we can think about it, but even then it's a lack of respect for the opponent."
