KEITH SOUTHERN aims to help lead Huddersfield Town back to the sublime in South London tomorrow.

The midfielder accepts there’s been a sharp contrast in his side’s last two performances.

While Town sank their teeth into high-flying Wolves, who were beaten 2-1 at the John Smith’s last Saturday, they were poor at struggling Peterborough, who climbed off the bottom of the Championship with a 3-1 win on Tuesday.

Simon Grayson’s side, their hopes of a fourth successive away win well and truly dashed, slipped from third to sixth (they are now seventh).

And former Blackpool favourite Southern says it’s time to bounce back by showing bravery against the 19th-placed Lions at their notoriously partisan Bermondsey base.

“The result at Peterborough was a bitter pill to swallow,” admitted the 31-year-old.

“We have set a standard this season and after the way we played against Wolves, when we produced a terrific performance against a good side who will be up there at the end of the season, we went to Peterborough expecting a much better performance, but it didn’t happen.

“Successful sides are consistent sides, and we have to find that quality, because we went from the sublime to the ridiculous in two games.

“We have bounced back well after defeats this season and we have to do the same against Millwall.

“We need to put Peterborough behind us, show some resilience and make sure we’re right at it, both physically and mentally.

“It’s always pretty hostile down there, and you know you’re in a game, but we are certainly capable of getting the three points.

“We have the chance of making it nine out of the last 12 available, and that would be a very decent return.”

Millwall are unbeaten in five, but have drawn four of those, having held a three-goal lead before being pegged back by Birmingham at the New Den on Tuesday.

They have yet to keep a clean sheet in 12 league games this season and boss Kenny Jackett admitted: “You can’t give three goals away and expect to get anything on too many occasions.

“It was a great shame because it covered up some of the best attacking football we have played this season.

“We have to do better defensively, obviously. We have to sustain periods of pressure without conceding goals.”

Jackett hopes to have midfielder James Henry back after a hamstring injury, while Shane Lowry is on stand-by to replace left-back Jack Smith, who is a doubt after damaging a leg muscle against Birmingham.

Skipper Paul Robinson is a long-term absentee after a hernia problem, but ex-Wolves striker Andy Keogh is pushing for a recall after losing out to Darius Henderson and on-loan West Brom forward Chris Wood, who scored twice on Tuesday.

Millwall also have Sheffield Wednesday centre-back Mark Beevers on loan while Town fans will recognise former Oldham winger Chris Taylor.

Town head to Millwall seeking only a fourth win in 20 visits.

Andy Booth and Malvin Kamara clinched a 2-1 League I win in 2007-08 while Mark Lillis, Dave Cowling and Phil Wilson were on target in a 3-1 Division III (now League I) triumph in 1981-82.

Back in the 1966-67 Second Division (now Championship) campaign, future Millwall player Brian Clark (2) and Colin Dobson netted in another 3-1 victory.

Oxfordshire’s Graham Scott is tomorrow’s referee.
