Knight slays Dragons

Huddersfield 5 - 1 Wrexham. Andy Booth may have scored again but Leon Knight was Town's main man as he scored twice to finish off Wrexham at the McAlpine.

Martyn Chalk had earlier given Wrexham a shock lead after 25 dull minutes with a well taken free kick which he drilled past Martyn Margetson's outstretched right hand after Darren Ferguson elected to touch off the ball.

The goal sparked off Town's recovery and it began after Danny Schofield was tripped by Willie Miller in the penalty area after a great run down the left.

The referee checked with his linesman before awarding the penalty which John Thorrington coolly sidefooted home past the left hand of Kristian Rogers.

Wrexham had held the lead for for 3 minutes and they might have gone behind after 38 minutes when Leon Knight, an increasing threat with his pace and flair, was coming back from the byline and looked to have tricked his way past Darren Ferguson before the Dragons playmaker brought him down in the box.

The referee had already booked Ferguson and opted to ignore claims for a second penalty from most of the McAlpine.

The game was delicately balanced going into the second half and Town started brilliantly with a goal almost straight away from Chris Holland who slid a left footed shot past Rogers after Mattis' intelligent pass.

Rogers had to go off soon after this and, despite a short period of Wrexham pressure followed by a lengthy drama when Steve Jenkins sustained a groin injury but wasn't immediately taken off, the Terriers finished off the game through Leon Knight.

The diminuitive striker struck twice in two minutes in the second half to finish off the quickly subsiding Dragons.

His first, on 63 minutes, was a well taken rising shot which almost pierced the back of sub keeper David Walsh's net after he ran onto an Andy Booth flick-on and struck it well with his left boot.

Around a minute later, Knight was dancing in front of the Kilner Bank after picking up on John Thorrington's pacy cross and putting the ball past Walsh again.

Knight got a thoroughly deserved standing ovation as he left the field with 10 minutes to go but the entertainment was not over as Andy Booth made it 5-1 after latching on to a Chris Holland cross after the Town midfielder had combined well with Danny Schofield down the left.
