HUDDERSFIELD Town Ladies have been awarded the FA Charter Standard Award, which is given for the development of the club both on and off the field and makes them one of the West Riding FA's flagship clubs for girls.

The club can boast five teams - two open age, as well as Under 16, 14 and 12s - who train on Wednesdays under the floodlights at Lockwood Park's Astroturf pitch.

The first team gained a much-needed 3-1 win at Sporting Links Caistor, with 15-year-old Kate Mallin giving them the lead after 20 minutes with a close-range shot.

Mel Sherwood made it 2-0 10 minutes into the second half, but Caistor then fought back to dominate possession and with 15 minutes remaining pulled a goal back.

Town held on however, and Jo Atkinson settled it with a third strike from distance for a victory which leaves Huddersfield ninth in the 12-strong Yorkshire and Humberside Premier Division.

Meanwhile, the club's Under 14s reached the quarter-finals of the Four Counties League Cup after defeating Handsworth Girls (Sheffield) 3-2 at Grange Moor.

In an excellent team performance, Town took the lead midway through the first half when Vicky Mellor scored after latching onto a through ball from Jade England.

Handsworth fought back and equalised before Ana Mesarovic restored Town's lead before half-time.

After the break Handsworth again levelled at 2-2 and were denied the lead by an excellent save from Town keeper Rebecca Harper who tipped a shot over for a corner, while Hannah Kimberlin was also resolute in defence.

And with 10 minutes left Vicky Mellor netted her second goal to put her side through to the last eight.

* Kirklees Ladies made their first outing in four weeks, holding Ossett Albion to a 1-1 draw.

Kirklees played well in the first period with Debbie Tomlinson lobbing the Ossett keeper from outside the box to open the scoring.

But after the break Kirklees lost their way as Ossett equalised.
