Back in the sixties Huddersfield Town produced a world ruler (England 1966 winner Ray Wilson), a double hero (Arsenal’s Bob McNab) and British football’s most expensive player in the position (Chris Cattlin, who joined Coventry City for £70,000 in March 1968).

But in recent years, left-back has proved something of a problem position.

Here a run through of five to play at left-back since promotion from League I in 2012.

Calum Woods

Lee Clark signed the Scouser from Dunfermline Athletic in June 2011 as a right-back.

But the Liverpool product’s versatility meant he often played on the left.

He was in that position for the 2012 Wembley League I play-iff final win under Clark’s successor Simon Grayson.

Woods, now 28, made 81 Town appearances before leaving in 2014.

Grayson took him to Preston North End, who have just handed him a new contract until 2018.

Paul Dixon

Aberdeen-born Dixon enjoyed a memorable start to his Town career after joining from Dundee United in July 2012.

Boss Simon Grayson was preparing for the Championship after promotion via the play-offs.

And Dixon, seen as a key arrival, made his Scotland debut during that season’s first international break.

He won three caps, but fell down the pecking order at club level under former England left-back Chris Powell.

Dixon, now 28, rejoined Dundee United during the last winter transfer window.

Jake Carroll

Big things were expected of the Irish player when he was signed from Dublin side St Patrick’s Athletic in the summer of 2013.

Then Town manager Mark Robins saw him as first-team material, and he featured in seven games early in his first season.

However Paul Dixon regained the position and Carroll was loaned out to Bury.

He had a spell at Partick Thistle at the start of last season.

Carroll, now 24, made just one further Town start and one appearance from the bench before joining Hartlepool United in the summer.

Jack Robinson

Chris Powell signed England Under 21 player Robinson from QPR in late August 2014.

The Londoners, then in the Premier League, had just signed him from Liverpool.

He had been the second-youngest ever to play for Liverpool at 16 years and 250 days.

Robinson, now 22, made 31 Town appearances before suffering a serious knee injury last March.

He is currently working his way back to fitness.

Reece James

The Manchester United player was brought in on loan following Robinson’s injury.

James, who recently turned 22, impressed on his third spell away from Old Trafford (after Carlisle United and Rotherham United).

There was talk of a return to the John Smith’s Stadium for the current campaign.

But Town instead recruited Australian international Jason Davidson after he departed West Bromwich Albion.

James, who has made one Manchester United appearance is currently on loan at League I Wigan Athletic.
