David Wagner expects Huddersfield Town midfielder Dean Whitehead to make a decision on a potential transfer to Championship rivals Rotherham United in the next couple of days.

The experienced former Middesbrough, Stoke City and Sunderland man featured in Saturday’s 2-0 friendly victory at Oldham Athletic.

But boss Wagner, whose attention now shifts to Wednesday’s big home date with Liverpool, said that doesn’t necessarily mean the 34-year-old will stay at the John Smith’s Stadium.

“There is no pressure on Dean,” explained Wagner, who left Whitehead’s fellow midfielder Ivan Paurevic out against Oldham because of illness.

“He knows I would like to keep him, that he is welcome here, and he knows what he can expect from us this season and what he can expect at Rotherham.

“Dean knows he has to make a decision, and he is experienced enough to make a good decision.

“He is the type of character that when he makes a decision, he stands behind it 100%.

“In the meantime he is working as normal with us with a good attitude as usual.

“We will accept whatever decision he makes, and he has all the time he needs.

“But I don’t expect a situation where it takes a fortnight.”
