Huddersfield Town coach Steve Thompson could be in the Leeds United dug-out by the time Derby County visit Elland Road on Saturday.

United remain keen on the 50-year-old, who played alongside Whites chief Neil Redfearn at Bolton Wanderers.

Negotiations over a ‘transfer fee’ for the former Blackpool coach are believed to be ongoing.

Thompson arrived at Town in June as assistant to then-manager Mark Robins.

He became joint first-team coach alongside Steve Eyre after the appointment of Chris Powell and his sidekick Alex Dyer in September.

Town climbed above Leeds in the table as they went 14th with Saturday’s goalless home draw against Sheffield Wednesday.

Redfearn’s side slipped to 16th after a 2-1 defeat at Blackburn Rovers.
