MIDWIVES at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary helped safely deliver a special group of babies.

Four Leap Year babies were born yesterday on the most unusual day of the year.

And they included Leon Brown, weighing in at 7lb 4oz, who was born to mum Emma Brown, 19, of Deighton.

Leon, unlike most people, will only officially celebrate his birthday once every four years and Ms Brown said it will be unusual marking the day in this way.

She added: “It will be strange.

“I would imagine he will get a number of cards for every fourth year and a normal birthday card each other year.”

Both Ms Brown and Leon’s father, Garry Powell, 23, also from Deighton, said they will celebrate his birthday on February 28.

But Ms Brown said she never expected to have a leap year baby.

“He was a week overdue so I never expected him to be born on this day. But it certainly makes him more special to me,” she said.

“All the nurses who helped me with the delivery were fantastic.

“I think the fact that his official birthday is only once every fours years means he will get pampered even more.”

Every four years it takes the earth over 365 days to orbit the sun. Leap years are needed to keep our annual calendar in alignment with the earth's revolutions around the planet.
