IT was a cup final chosen by those behind the Wimbledon seedings.

Moldgreen will meet Bay Athletic in the Hoyle Cup final at the Galpharm Stadium next week.

And that’s hardly a surprise, given that those two teams have been neck and neck in the race for the league championship for most of the season.

Moldgreen secured their first-ever visit to the final with a surprisingly one-sided 4-0 victory over Syngenta Sports a week ago.

But Bay Athletic were given a much harder task, having to get past Hepworth United in this week’s semi-final.

They managed it 2-0 to make a return to the Galpharm.

It means of course that there is a great opportunity for one of the sides to register a league a cup double.

Moldgreen have a three-point lead at the top of the table but Bay do have two games in hand, and both are well clear of the chasing pack.

In Division 2, there is little doubt about where the title will end up.

Aimbry have won all 16 of their league games to date and have a huge eight-point lead over Sovereign Sports.

Aimbry’s latest triumph was a 5-1 win over Lindley Lib, thanks to goals from Tarzi (2), Ellis (2) and Beevers.

Sovereign, meanwhile, were romping to a 6-0 away win at Lepton.

Another side new to the Works League, Springhead, have had an excellent debut.

They have a predominantly young side packed with skilful ball players and they have won eight of their games.

The latest was a convincing 6-0 home win over Ireti Athletic, which lifted Springhead to fourth place, with games in hand on Lindley Lib, just one place above them.

They have conceded just 15 goals – the fewest in the league.
