David Wagner believes leading scorer Nahki Wells will be back in the Huddersfield Town squad for the EFL Cup trip to Shrewsbury.

The 26-year-old Bermudian missed the final four pre-season matches because of a knee injury and wasn’t included for the excellent opening-day 2-1 win against Brentford.

Instead, Wells – who grabbed 18 goals last season – has been stepping up his training and Wagner feels he is on the verge of a return.

There's speculation of interest in the striker from Championship rivals from Derby County and Norwich City, but Wagner - taking charge of his first League Cup tie - explained: “Nahki is good and he was training for the three days before the Brentford match.

“He has been doing some catch-up because, on days where we have had only one training in the day, he has been doing tougher sessions.

“If all goes well, he will join us for Shrewsbury in the squad.”

Elias Kachunga led the line in Wells’ absence against Brentford and scored the opener – Kasey Palmer sealing the deal after Nico Yennaris had equalised for The Bees.

Kachunga went off after 65 minutes suffering tightness in a hamstring, but is expected to be fit to face Micky Mellon’s League One outfit, who lost their opener 1-0 against MK Dons at Greenhous Meadow.

On Kachunga, Wagner added: “This is why we signed him, because he never gives up.

“He likes to work and he is the sort of striker who defenders find uncomfortable to play against.

“Elias scores goals, as he showed in pre-season and against Brentford, and he offers something, hopefully, which British football suits and which supporters will like.”
