David Wagner's men faced an uphill struggle when Dutch winger Rajiv van La Parra was sent of for two bookable offences mid-way through the first-half.
Roy Beerens' deflected shot opened the scoring for the home side in the 41st minute before Huddersfield Town rallied to produce a heroic second-half display.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, David Wagner's men dominated the second 45 minutes with Nahki Wells , Michael Hefele and Elias Kachunga all having opportunities to equalise for Town.
