TOWN'S 2-1 home win over Newcastle lifted them to second place in the Division II table - and stirred thoughts of a promotion push.

Goals from Jim Kerray and Les Massie secured a fourth win in six games for Eddie Boot's side.

Town set off a cracking pace with enough excitement to keep the 18,078 crowd - the biggest of the season at Leeds Road - yelling their heads off for minutes on end.

During the second half a band of Newcastle supporters, no doubt remembering the balmy days when their club basked in the top flight, began to hurl abuse at manager Charlie Mitten.

Their complaints seemed unjust when winger Len White (later to join Town in a deal which took Scotsman Kerray to St James' Park) reduced Town's lead to 2-1 in the 78th minute.

It began to look as though the black and white moaners would have to eat their words.

Mitten was facing problems as the Toon attack had scored only three goals in 540 minutes of football, a dismal record which would make any manager shake with anxiety.

Town, meanwhile, were enjoying a sixth outing as an unchanged team and Kerray's artistry lead to the opening goal on 14 minutes.

Receiving the ball from Derek Stokes, he slammed it low into the bottom corner before goalkeeper David Hollins had chance to realise what was happening.

Massie then showed his real value and his goal was just reward for a strenuous afternoon's work when he nodded home Kevin McHale's inch-perfect cross.

Unfortunately Town's early drive and enterprise didn't last as they finished the season seventh - Newcastle were 11th.
