MELTHAM won the Gee Cup by beating Holme Valley Academicals 2-1 at Laund Hill.

Meltham dominated the opening period and broke the deadlock on 24 minutes with a crisp 20-yard strike from Jimmy Hampshire which found the bottom corner.

The side who are fourth in the District League’s Reserve Division III (Academicals are second) continued to press and had several chances to extend their lead before half-time.

The second goal arrived on 60 minutes thanks to a stunning solo effort by Gareth Brewins who beat three men before firing the ball home.

But, with 10 minutes remaining Holme Valley sprung into life, creating several chances before Dale Morgan finally netted in the 90th minute.

In stoppage time, Academicals wasted a glorious chance to take the match to extra time, but the striker failed to hit the target from six yards out.
