A HAT TRICK by Junior Mendes put Jon Dungworth's Town Reserves side one step closer to promotion to the Pontin's Holidays League Premier Division.

Dungworth's team now head the First Division East table by a point from Scunthorpe.

The Glanford Park side have a game in hand, but their final match of the season is against Town in Lincolnshire on Wednesday, April 27 in what has become a winner takes all showdown.

Town were always comfortably in control against third-placed Doncaster yesterday afternoon.

And it was a surprise that only Mendes' 20th-minute close-range goal from a Rob Edwards cross separated the sides at half-time.

Striker John McAliskey drove a shot straight at goalkeeper Lee Cockerham on 11 minutes.

Meanwhile centre-back John McCombe's header from Aaron Hardy's neat ball in crashed back off the crossbar with 19 minutes on the clock.

Doncaster posed virtually no threat, while Town's neat passing and thoughtful running off the ball kept the visitors busy.

Matty Young produced an inspired performance for the home side, running with relish from the centre of the pitch in support of Mendes and McAliskey.

Young should have been rewarded with a goal on 39 minutes but the Rovers goalkeeper got down well to smother.

A strong solo run by Lee Fowler in the 49th minute looked likely to set up Town's second.

The Welshman unselfishly squared the ball for McAliskey, but his firm drive was palmed around the post.

A minute later McCombe's shot was parried by the goalkeeper and Mendes pounced to fire in his second from the edge of the box.

Doncaster surprisingly pulled a goal back from their only attack of note when Town goalkeeper Jacob Giles could only parry Andy Matthews' shot from Liam Green's deep cross, and Matthews slotted home at the second attempt.

Young's pin-point centre on 72 minutes should have been converted by McAliskey, but he tamely sidefooted it to the keeper.

Mendes wrapped things up on 78 minutes after a neat one-two with McAliskey, the final shot being driven through the keeper's legs.
