Huddersfield Town have completed the signing of Middlesbrough midfielder Jacob Butterfield on a four-year deal.

The 24-year-old arrives at the John Smith’s Stadium as Adam Clayton makes his move in the opposite direction to join Aitor Karanka’s Championship squad at the Riverside.

Town are getting an undisclosed seven-figure fee for Clayton, believed to be £1.5m rising to a possible £2m with add-ons.

The former Barnsley and Norwich player Butterfield is believed to be valued at around £750,000.

Butterfield met his new teammates at last night’s Capital One Cup clash against Chesterfield, when the team – under the guidance of caretaker boss Mark Lillis – scored a 5-3 comeback extra-time win to reach tonight’s second-round draw.

Caretaker manager Mark Lillis is looking forward to working with Butterfield, saying: “He played against my son Josh when Middlesbrough played a friendly at Rochdale.

“He’s a good player, good on the ball and versatile, and he provides good delivery. Jacob is a bright lad and he is keen to play here. It’s good to have him with us.”

Butterfield will go straight into contention for a debut at Cardiff on Saturday.

Neither Butterfield nor Clayton have played a competitive game so far this season, with Boro due to visit Clayton’s old club Leeds on Saturday.
