Scott McDonald could be back on starting duty for Millwall against his former club Town on Saturday.
The 30-year-old Aussie striker, who was signed on loan from Southampton in 2002-03, was on the Lions bench for Saturday’s FA Cup third-round defeat at Southend.
Millwall’s misery at a 4-1 Roots Hall defeat was compounded by a red card for frontman Jermaine Easter, who must now serve a three-match suspension.
And that could signal a return for McDonald, a close-season signing from Middlesbrough, as new manager Ian Holloway makes his first team selection.
Holloway inherits a squad including Wales international frontman Steve Morison, who is back at Millwall on a season-long loan from Leeds.
Captain and defender Paul Robinson and Liam Trotter could both be back after knee injuries, but Liam Feeney, like Trotter a midfielder, remains sidelined by a hamstring problem.
Millwall are 20th in the Championship having suffered four defeats in their last five league games, and Holloway, who replaces Steve Lomas, said: “The first thing is to stop losing.
“I look around the dressing room and there’s some fantastic talent. I’ll try and galvanise them into a way of playing – a Millwall way of hard work and effort. Kenny Jackett did a fantastic job to get the lads up into the Championship and we’ve had some changes which don’t always work.
“It’s a new group with lots of changes, but a fresh voice in me might help them a little bit.
“I want them to enjoy their football and start getting some results under their belts.”
Holloway, who aims to deny Town a first double of the campaign after their 1-0 win at The New Den in August, added: “I love the game – it’s an art form.
“You have to enjoy what you are trying to do. I want the players) to enjoy coming to work. When you’re getting beaten it’s not fun, and I want to enjoy my life. That’s what I’ve told them. It’s all about enjoyment and encouragement. They looked a bit down after last weekend, so let’s see what we can do.”
