DAVID MIRFIN'S big gamble paid off - and he'd no idea!

The teenage defender slid in to grab his third goal of the season for a winner at Sincil Bank but never saw the ball finish in the net.

"It didn't feel as though I'd got much of a touch and I'd no idea where the ball had gone," admitted the delighted centre-back, who scored against York and Scunthorpe in the regular campaign.

"As I stood up I still didn't realise what had happened and it was only when Efe Sodje and Iffy Onuora jumped on me that it sunk in I'd scored.

"I didn't really believe it because I didn't see the ball go into the net, but I'll take it any day of the week, especially with it being such an important goal for us."

Mirfin's instructions at corners vary - he and Steve Yates were great decoys for Onuora's opener - and he's happy to just cause mayhem for opposition defences.

"I could see Boothy was going to win the header and I was just gambling that the ball might come back off the keeper," he said.

"Luckily it worked out that way and we've now got a lead to take into the McAlpine for another big game on Wednesday night.

"All the lads are looking forward to it, there will be a massive crowd and, hopefully, we can reward them with the right result."
