TALENTED David Mirfin is facing a long spell on the sidelines.

The 18-year-old defender pulled a hamstring in a practice match against Preston at Storthes Hall yesterday.

"We don't know how long Dave might be out at this stage, but it looks a bad one," said manager Peter Jackson.

"He was in quite a lot of pain and we immediately got it iced up, but he'll obviously be out for a spell and that's a massive blow and disappointment.

"Mirf has been heavily involved in the first team this season and he's done really well. He's a strong player, though, so I'm sure he will bounce back as soon as possible."

Mirfin was on the bench against Hull and has been in Jackson's top 16 for all bar two matches since August.

Midfielder Chris Holland (ankle) is back in training and played in the 1-1 draw.

Former Town midfielder Ben Thornley has signed for Emley's UniBond League Premier rivals Stalybridge Celtic.

The 28-year-old winger was released by Bury last Friday and snapped up at Bower Fold, although he could not play in last night's 2-0 FA Cup defeat against Barnet.
