GERRY MURPHY took pride in his second derby victory over Leeds but insisted: “It’s for the fans.”

Saturday’s exciting 2-1 success at Elland Road, sealed by Michael Collins’ stoppage-time volley after Joe Skarz had struck 27 seconds into the second half to cancel out a fourth-minute Leeds opener by Robert Snodgrass, followed Town’s 1-0 win over their West Yorkshire rivals at the Galpharm in April.

“It’s the game the supporters look forward to and we said beforehand we had to work hard, stick together and win it for them,” said Murphy after the second game of his third spell as caretaker manager.

“The players have prepared well all week and they deserved a win which could turn the season for us.”

The lunchtime victory, which came in front of 32,028, lifted Town to 14th and means they head to Brighton on Saturday seeking a third successive League I win.

Murphy will continue to work on his players’ fitness levels this week and explained: “We lacked concentration at the end of the previous game (the 4-3 FA Cup defeat by Port Vale) and it’s an area we’ll keep working on.”

Murphy made two changes, bringing in James Berrett at sweeper for a first league start of the season and Keigan Parker up front (Robbie Williams and Phil Jevons missed out) and explained: “James was my first choice to play sweeper against Port Vale but he wasn’t fully fit.

“I know what a versatile player James is and what a good football brain he has and when we spoke during the build-up he insisted the size of the occasion wouldn’t be a problem for him. I thought he was a giant.

“I knew Leeds were a great side going forward but felt that if there was a weakness, it was between right-back and centre-back because Frazer Richardson likes to get forward.

“We felt we could catch them out in that area and brought in Keigan Parker for his pace and ability to get around the back.”
