MURRAY WALLACE marked his fourth Huddersfield Town start with a first goal for the club and admitted: “I don’t think many people were expecting that.”

Asked if he knew the odds on him netting, the 20-year-old quipped: “I shouldn’t think I was even on the bookies’ sheet!

“To be serious, though, going up for set plays and using your height and heading ability is always going to be part of a centre-back’s game.

“I did get a couple of goals when I was at Falkirk, and it’s great to have got one for Town, it’s just a shame we couldn’t hold out for the win.”

Called in for calf-injury victim Anthony Gerrard, Scotland Under 21 international Wallace explained: “I knew there was a chance because Gezza had that niggling problem after the Bolton game.

“I was told I was playing when I came in on Saturday morning and I was delighted, because it’s a vote of confidence from the manager.

“I tried to repay his faith, and while I was disappointed with their first goal, I thought I did okay overall.”

Wallace continued: “To lose the lead so late on was a blow, but we are out of the bottom three, which is a plus.

“Now we need to crack on and get ready for another big game next week.

“I’d love to be involved down at Wolves, but it’s a squad game, and it’s down to who is fit and available and who the manager decides to go with.

“I firmly believe we have a squad who are more than capable of staying up, as long as we maintain our focus.

“If we do that and play the way we know we can play, the results will come for us.”

While Wallace was making his seventh Town appearance overall, teenage striker Paul Mullin marked the offer of a first-year professional contract at Town by notching a hat trick in the 4-1 academy victory over Wigan at Canalside.

Regan Booty, the son of former Town player and coach Martyn, got the other goal in a third successive win.
