David Wagner praised Huddersfield Town 's workrate in their 2-0 Shankly Trophy defeat by Premier League Liverpool - but said his players have to be sharper in front of goal.

A first-half strike by Marko Grujic and a late Alberto Moreno penalty sealed success for Jurgen Klopp's side in the contest of the former Borussia Dortmund managerial colleagues.

The clash, which was briefly halted during the second half as a drone was flown over the John Smith's Stadium, was watched by a sell-out 21,266 crowd.

Wagner said: "I like that we worked, that we tried to adapt as quickly as we could to Liverpool's speed, and that we were brave enough to keep the ball and try to build up our game.

"But we have to be braver in the final third in some situations. We had six or seven shots but seldom gave the goalkeeper the opportunity to show his potential."

Town now head to Austria for a two-match tour before returning to prepare for the Championship opener at home to Brentford on Saturday, August 6.

Wagner added: "We have to build up our fitness but I am happy everyone is healthy. Philip Billing took a knock on the ankle but it is not too bad."

Nahki Wells, Kasey Palmer and Ivan Paurevic missed the Liverpool clash but are expected to be fine to fly to Austria this weekend.
