Concerned Huddersfield Town fans will be worried that Derby County’s failure to land Sheffield Wednesday ace Fernando Forestieri could add urgency to their reported interest in Nahki Wells .

It’s claimed the Owls have knocked back a £7m bid for Forestieri, who scored 15 times last season and sealed Sunday’s home Championship win over Aston Villa.

Hillsborough boss Carlos Carvalho insists the Italian is staying in Sheffield as he plots a Premier League return.

That means as transfer deadline day (August 31) looms ever closer, Derby could ramp up their interest in Wells, Town’s top scorer for the last two seasons.

The Bermuda international has also been linked with Norwich City, while Saturday’s hosts Newcastle United and Fulham are among other clubs claimed to be keen on the 26-year-old former Bradford City man.

Wells, contracted to Town until 2018, is fit again after a knee injury.

Head coach David Wagner resisted the temptation to bring him off the bench with his side trailing 2-1 in the English Football League Cup first-round defeat at Shrewsbury Town.

The boss said his decision was purely tactical, with defender Michael Hefele brought on and pushed up front as Town temporarily went long ball in their fruitless bid for an equaliser.

“I didn’t feel we could get through them to make the kind of chances Nahki thrives on,” said Wagner, who had already used Ivan Paurevic and Kasey Palmer as substitutes.

“My feeling was that we had to go with the long ball and try to win the second ball for the remainder of the game, so bringing Hefe on was tactical.

“It’s not our normal style, but if you have only 10 minutes to go and you think you can’t create chances on the ground, you have to be different.”

Wagner said his decision to replace midfielder Jonathan Hogg with Croatian Paurevic at half-time followed the stand-in skipper’s first-half yellow card.

“I was concerned that we might not finish the game with 11 v 11,” said the boss, who also saw Paurevic and Hefele cautioned.

Captain Mark Hudson was booked during Town’s 2-1 opening-day Championship win over Brentford.
