Huddersfield Town have not made a bid for flying Swindon wideman Nathan Byrne.

Sources in Wiltshire have suggested Town were knocking on the door for the highly-rated 23-year-old – who can play right wing-back or wing.

I understand, however, Town have not made a bid for the Tottenham Hotspur product, who is rated in the £1m bracket.

Byrne is one of a number of players Chris Powell’s staff have been linked with, but news their supposed six-figure bid is fabrication suggests their strengthening priorities are elsewhere.

While there appears to have been no further movement so far in Derby County’s interest in star Town midfielder Jacob Butterfield - they are being linked with Tottenham's Alex Pritchard - Town have Sean Scannell as No1 choice on the right and others who can fit into that position if necesssary.

And Byrne would be an expensive option, largely because Swindon have to pay half any fee received for him to Tottenham (as part of his original transfer from White Hart Lane).

That’s why Swindon are understood to be wanting upwards of £850,000 which, with add-ons, would take the fee beyond the £1m mark.

Byrne – who scored a hat trick against Bradford at the start of this season – has one-year left on his County Ground contract and has rejected the offer of another deal.

This season, he has been playing mostly on the right of a three-pronged attack, while he can also operate in the No10 role. Last term, he was used exclusively as a wing-back on the right hand side.

Burnley, West Brom, Brentford and Cardiff are all being linked with interest in the St Albans-born player, who is very attack minded.

Byrne is quick, skilful on the ball and one of those who can make things happen when the team need a spark.

The Championship would seem the next logical move for him and Town have definitely done their homework, but they have not made an offer.

This current transfer window closes next Tuesday at 6pm.

Chairman Dean Hoyle has confirmed that cash from the Alex Smithies transfer to QPR is available for Powell to strengthen his squad.

Town have also been linked with Conor Hourihane of Barnsley, Gillingham’s Bradley Dack, Shrewsbury’s Ryan Woods and Liverpool teenager Ryan Kent but, like Byrne, just because they have all been watched doesn’t necessarily translate into firm interest.
