OVER 1,000 fans watched Town's new faces make a bright first impression against Wakefield and Emley at Belle Vue last night.

Andy Booth and new partner Jon Newby got the goals which marked Peter Jackson's return to management with the Mick Green Memorial Trophy, but it was an encouraging all-round team performance.

Centre-backs Steve Yates and Ian Hughes ensured keeper Ian Gray had a virtually trouble-free night for a clean sheet, while there were excellent touches from Lee Fowler in central midfield and Tony Carss on the left.

Carss, in fact, who played at his own request despite a thigh niggle which forced him off at half time, created the opening goal for Booth on 25 minutes, following a mistake by Andy Wilson at the heart of the Emley defence.

Booth's cool left-foot finish was matched by Newby, three minutes into the second half, after Fowler's pass found him in plenty of space in the box.

It was not the first time Newby had the defence at the mercy of his pace, and his workrate across the frontline was impressive.

His turn of foot also gives Town an outlet pass over the top, and skipper Rob Edwards was often keen to exploit the fact as he joined the early attacks with familiar verve.

A Jamie Ingledow shot covered smartly by Gray was Emley's best effort in what was a solid workout for new manager Ian Banks and his stack of trialists, and he'll be hoping to keep top striker Simeon Bambrook on contract for the UniBond League season which kicks off against Southport on August 16.

Despite a flood of second-half substitutions, Town remained on top, however, and were unlucky not to extend their lead when Cuss save at close-quarters from Booth and when Andrew Holdsworth's flying header hit the bar.

At that stage, young Adnan Ahmed was catching the eye in midfield along with Tyrone Thompson and the highly competitive Fowler.
