Huddersfield Town are running the rule over former Newcastle United and Nigeria international striker Shola Ameobi.

The 33-year-old, who had a spell at Crystal Palace last season, is a free agent and therefore not bound by the transfer window.

He has trained with Town and featured in a behind-closed-doors practice match.

Born in Nigeria but raised in England, Ameobi was capped by England at Under 21 level.

He made his Nigeria debut in 2012 and represented them at the 2014 World Cup.

In 10 appearances for the Super Eagles, he has notched twice.

Ameobi scored 79 goals in 219 starts and 178 substitute outings for Newcastle before leaving in 2014.

He had a brief stint in Turkey before spending the second half of last season at Palace.

He is the older brother of Cardiff City winger Sammy and former Leeds United and Doncaster Rovers frontman Tomi.
