Former Huddersfield Town midfielder Michael Flynn has taken charge of Newport’s academy.

The 33-year-old will combine the role with playing for his hometown club.

Flynn’s form for the League II side last season persuaded manager Justin Edinburgh to reverse an earlier decision not to offer a new contract.

Flynn, who scored five goals in 27 appearances for Town in 2008-09, signed a 12-month playing contract at the club where he began his career and where he is in his third spell.

He has also played for Barry Town, Wigan, Blackpool, Gillingham and Bradford and has aspirations to eventually move into management.

Now he has taken on coaching duties as well and said: “It is something I have always wanted to do.

“If Justin moves on to bigger things, then he might take me with him, or there could be an opportunity here.

“But they only thing I am thinking of is playing some good football for Newport and producing some good players for the first team.”

Newport, who were formed in 1989 after the demise of the original club and share Rodney Parade with the town’s rugby union team, were promoted from the Conference 12 months ago and finished 14th in League II last season.
