Excited fans are hoping Huddersfield Town can equal their best start to a league campaign since 1979 by clinching victory at Aston Villa on Tuesday.

But as he continued preparations for Town’s first visit to the Birmingham club since 1987, boss David Wagner said: “I am more concerned about working than dreaming.”

Two games in, Wagner’s charges are joint second in the Championship after following up their opening-day home victory over Brentford by winning 2-1 at Newcastle United.

There were more than 3,000 travelling supporters in a St James’ Park crowd of 52,079, the highest ever for a second-tier match involving Town.

Now comes a visit to Villa Park, where 33,286 saw Saturday’s 3-0 win over Rotherham United for Roberto Di Matteo’s men.

The last time Town won their first three league games, Mick Buxton was manager and his side went on to win promotion from Division IV (now League II).

They also won their first three (Villa were among the victims) under Ian Greaves in 1969-70, the last season Town earned promotion to the top flight.

Wagner was delighted to give the fans a victory to savour in the North-East, where Nahki Wells and Jack Payne scored, but is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

“It was an outstanding performance and a pretty good day for Huddersfield Town,” he said.

“Our supporters were fantastic, and they can be a huge help to us as we try to make a step forward as a club.

“At the moment there is a great togetherness here and it was something special to see the players celebrate with the fans.

“We are still Huddersfield Town, still not a club who can buy success.

“We know where we come from but we also know our ambitions.

“As a player, I was always a worker not a dreamer, and it’s the same for me now.

“We don’t have any reason to dream, but we have every reason to work.”
