David Wagner is looking forward to taking on his old mate Jurgen Klopp when Liverpool visit Huddersfield Town on Wednesday.

But the John Smith’s Stadium boss says it will be business as usual in terms of pre-season training despite the high-profile nature of the latest friendly.

Both sides go into the sell-out Shankly Trophy showdown, which will be seen by around 21,000 fans, with 100% records so far.

Wagner’s Town have won at Guiseley and Oldham Athletic and beaten Accrington Stanley and Rochdale behind closed doors.

Klopp’s Liverpool have chalked up victories at Tranmere Rovers, Fleetwood Town and Wigan Athletic.

While the Reds start their Premier League campaign at Arsenal on Sunday, August 14, Town’s home Championship opener against Brentford is on Saturday, August 6.

Wagner, who worked with Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, says his sole aim is being fully prepared to face the Bees.

That means two Tuesday training sessions and one on the morning of the match.

“You always want to win games, not lose them, but this is still pre-season,” said Wagner, who takes his squad to Austria next week.

“At this stage you have to leave your comfort zone to improve.

“That is why the players showed some tiredness at Oldham and that is okay.

“They have to be able to work against uncomfortable moments in matches.

“That is why pre-season can be uncomfortable.”

After Liverpool, Town play their final two friendlies, against German sides Werder Bremen and FC Ingolstadt, while in Austria.
