Alex Neil will send his Norwich City side into action at Huddersfield Town insisting the bid for automatic promotion is still very much alive.

The fifth-placed Canaries lost ground when they were held 1-1 at home to fourth-placed Derby County and are now three points behind the top three Bournemouth, Watford and Middlesbrough.

Norwich, relegated from the Premier League last season, led through Huddersfield-born Cameron Jerome before own goal by keeper John Ruddy gifted Derby a point.

Boss Neil said: “I told the lads don’t be too despondent, you have played one of the top teams in the league and we were dominant in the match’,” he said.

“We created a lot more chances than them. We restricted them to very little, and if anyone had said that to you as a manager before the game you would’ve taken it.”

Former Hamilton Academical manager and Barnsley player Neil, appointed in January, was quick to excuse England international Ruddy for his slip-up.

“It’s a bit unfair on John and people will look at it and think he has made a mistake. I am sure he might have thought he could do better and he is disappointed, we all are,” he said.

“John has been fantastic since I came here. He has made some big saves in crucial games and he is one of the main reasons we are where we are.

“It will be highlighted more because he is a goalkeeper, but he has been fantastic.

“Regardless of that incident we had more than enough chances to win it. We had two golden opportunities in the last five minutes and didn’t stick them in.

“There were numerous chances in the game. It was just one of those days when it wouldn’t go in the net.”

Bournemouth, back on top of the table on goal difference after their 4-0 home win over Blackpool, now go to Cardiff City.

Second-placed Watford are at Wigan Athletic, who bolstered their survival hopes with a 2-1 victory at Rotherham United on Saturday.

Middlesbrough, the third of the three sides on 69 points, are away to fourth-placed Derby, who have 67 (Norwich are on 66).

Boro claimed a stylish 4-1 home win over Ipswich Town on Saturday, when on-loan Chelsea striker Patrick Bamford scored twice.
