Mark Robins says he won’t be tempted to plunge Huddersfield Town’s promising young players into first-team action until Championship performances improve.

While the 1-0 defeat at Blackpool left Town 16th ahead of Middlesbrough’s visit tomorrow, the Under 21s have already clinched their Professional Development League divisional title and will go into the play-offs for the second season running.

And the Under 18s, who beat Sheffield Wednesday 4-2 on Saturday with the help of a double by Albanian junior international Flo Bojaj, lead their PDL section having made the last eight of the FA Youth Cup (they put up a brave battle before going down 2-1 at Fulham last week).

Welsh junior international Jake Charles and Regan Booty also scored for the juniors at PPG Canalside, and Town have emphasised the importance of their academy system to taking the club forward.

But Robins, who had teenager Duane Holmes back on the bench at Blackpool after he returned from a loan stint at Yeovil, said: “The timing must be right.

“Young players need to be added when the team is playing better, otherwise they could be damaged in terms of mentality.”

The Under 18s, led by Frankie Bunn and Tony Carss, have home games against Nottingham Forest tomorrow (1.00) and Birmingham on Saturday (12.00).

Steve Eyre’s Under 21s return to action away to Birmingham a week today (1.00).
