Huddersfield Town are one of three clubs in the chase for Carlisle United teen sensation Kyle Dempsey, with the 19-year-old set to leave Keith Curle's side this summer.

Dempsey shone for Carlisle last season, finding the net 11 times and registering an impressive nine assists in all competitions, with fellow Championship side MK Dons and Yorkshire rivals Barnsley set to go head-to-head with Town in the race to purchase him.

The midfield schemer has just a year left on the 18-month contract extension he penned back at the start of this year and the League Two outfit are susceptible to offers.

But what sort of player is Dempsey and what can Town supporters expect to see if they are successful in their move to sign him.

We spoke to News and Star's Carlisle writer Jon Colman to get the lowdown on Dempsey and his career to this point.

What sort of player would Huddersfield Town be getting if they are successful in a move for Kyle Dempsey?

One of the most determined young footballers you could wish to find.

Dempsey has a rugby league background and is as physically robust as that would suggest.

He is confident in his game and his career and would not be shy about the prospect of proving himself against higher-league opponents.

He is an attack-minded midfielder who can also play up front, takes a decent corner and isn't afraid to shoot, but will also do all the graft needed and more for the team.

What are his best qualities and what are his weaknesses?

QUALITIES: At times last season Dempsey dragged Carlisle along almost single-handedly.

He always looks to be involved and never hides. He has a great engine and will stand up for himself and his team.

He is also a pretty good finisher and has a surprisingly good leap for a player who isn't the tallest.

It also said something about his character that the captain's armband seemed to inspire him when he wore it twice in 2014/15.

WEAKNESSES: As for weaknesses, they are probably all linked to inexperience - sometimes making the wrong decision in attacking situations, or a lack of precision at times.

He has also got a bit of fire in his belly and doesn't mind wading into a confrontation, but a red card for this at Tranmere last season might be an early lesson he has heeded.

He has played out wide and in the centre, where do you think he performs best?

The centre, as he doesn't really have the raw pace or trickery to be an out-and-out winger, though he could cope there I'm sure.

Dempsey is better in the middle, where his industrious approach can take full effect, and gives him better opportunities to attack the penalty area.

Have you been surprised by how quickly he has stepped up from the academy to first-team football at Carlisle?

Not particularly - he was rated very highly as he came through Carlisle's various academy age groups, and was always a cert to make the step up to the professional game.

That said, he probably exceeded expectations last season (also to his own admission).

In part this was because Carlisle struggled generally, meaning he stood out more. But there was also no denying the quality of many of his performances.

Do you think he is ready to make the step up to Championship football?

Perhaps not immediately, but many believe he has the potential, and Dempsey himself would certainly give it his best shot.

It is a huge leap from League Two to the second tier and shouldn't be underestimated.

He may need some time to refine his game further, but with regular football I'm sure he will get there.

It would be a great shame if he made the wrong move now and ended up "developing" for a season or two in an Under-21 squad.

Personally I think he'd sooner stay at Carlisle, and play every week, than do that. So it's vital he gets good advice and makes a sensible choice if he does leave Brunton Park.
