Chris Powell believes patience will pay off as Huddersfield Town look to make the most of Jake Charles’ potential.

Big things are expected of the Wales youth international from Leeds, who is the grandson of Elland Road legend John Charles.

Town boss Powell likes what he has seen of the 18-year-old forward, who is due to feature in Thursday’s development match against Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena, and believes he will make his mark at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Charles is contracted until 2017 (the club have the option of a further year), and Powell says Town should take their time over bringing him through.

Jake had an injury when I first arrived but I have seen enough of him to know there is real potential there,” said the boss, who is preparing for Saturday’s Championship clash with Cardiff City at the John Smith’s Stadium.

“I know he has done pretty well at academy level, and now he needs to gain experience with (coach) Frankie Bunn in the development side.

“Hopefully we will get to the point this season where he can come and train with the first team, but young players have to be ready for that.”

Powell accepts Charles’ family connections mean the winger or frontman has a lot to live up to.

John Charles starred for Wales and Juventus as well as Leeds while brother Mel played for Swansea City, Arsenal. Cardiff City and Wales.

“We don’t want people running away with their expectations because of his name,” he added.

“People should judge Jake on his own merits, and I really hope he will progress here.

“I think my managerial history shows I have no problem with putting young players in, but the timing is always crucial.

“Get that wrong and you can do more harm than good.”

Development keeper Lloyd Allinson and outfield players Joe Wright, Joe Wilkinson and Phil Billing have all featured in recent first-team squads.
