There’s been more positive reaction from Huddersfield Town fans to Dean Whitehead’s decision to stay.

The experienced midfielder had the offer of a one-year contract at Championship rivals Rotherham but has opted to stay at the John Smith’s Stadium and battle for a place under David Wagner.

Fans are delighted and Whitehead Tweeted: “Glad my future is clear, I’m here top fight for a place, improve myself and help this group of players develop.”

Whitehead says he likes the way the head coach plays his football and is enjoying being part of the club, where he is contracted for another season.

One fan Tweeted: “This is what is meant by healthy competition.

“Playing for their place, playing for the manager – all the successful teams in their respective divisions have this.

“Bodes well really. If he can get himself going like he was in the first half of last season, the other lads would have to be playing very very well to keep him out.”

Another agreed, posting: “Well done, him. Certainly gone up in my estimation.

“Determined to fight for his place against stiff competition in an increasingly younger – and fitter – squad.”

Now 34, Whitehead has been a stand-in captain for Town and, in addition to bolstering midfield, he could also deputise at right-back if necessary.

Epsom Terrier said: “Much respect to Dean Whitehead. Town are all the better for him staying.

“He’s still very important to us and I think he’ll be a big help to the new guys.

“One or two of his performances last season – Birmingham away comes to mind – proved he’s still a very good player.”

Town fan Harty posted: “Delighted about this news, think even if he doesn’t play that Dean is a vital player to have for when the going get tough, on or off the field.

“The man will have seen it all in his time, so will be able to guide what is an especially young team of ours.

“He’s perfect for what may possibly prove to be a transition year for us.”
