Crewe Alexandra are fourth, also on 56 points, but have played all 30 of their games and have a goal difference of 18.

That means the race for runners-up spot will be concluded on Saturday, when Town host Coventry City (11.30) and Sheffield United are at home to Hull City.

Scott netted 67 minutes into the game against Birmingham at St George’s Park.
