Huddersfield Town ended pre-season on a low note despite Nahki Wells' excellent first-half opener as they went down 2-1 at League One Barnsley.

Wells had twisted and turned his way into a shooting position before arrowing home to put Town in the ascendancy, but Kyle Dempsey's poor backpass allowed Sam Winnall to equalise before defender Mason Holgate headed a second-half winner.

But how did each Town player rank in their Oakwell defeat?

In pictures: Barnsley 2-1 Huddersfield Town

Smithies - Could do little to prevent either goal having been let down by his defence once again at Oakwell, but his kicking was occasionally suspect. Made some smart low saves to prevent any further damage. ?

Smith - Struggled with his distribution of the ball and did not always finding his intended targets but may also attach a share of the blame to his teammates for some questionable decision making in defence. 5

Hudson - Solid on the whole and won some crucial headers in the second period but should have offered more leadership to his rearguard when it came to dealing with the corner which led to Holgate's strike. 6

Lynch - Used the ball well, was solid in the tackle and attacked everything in the air, but his positional sense occasionally deserted him and it allowed the hosts to attack down the right, particularly in the first half. 6

Barnsley (2) v Huddersfield Town (1) pre season friendly - Mason Holgate scores Barnsley's winning goal.

Davidson - Impressed the most from the defensive unit, but he did show signs that he will have to catch up fitness-wise in the coming days. His passing ability and awareness of space down the left flank, however, was encouraging. 6

Scannell - A really disappointing display from the right winger, who failed to seize the opportunity in front of him as he was handed a starting berth, with the Tykes left-back looking particularly susceptible but he was offered an easy time of it. 5

Whitehead - A strong opening 20 or so minutes for the experienced midfield man but it was his lax pass in the opening period which put Dempsey under pressure, leading to his mistake and Barnsley's equaliser. 6

Butterfield - The midfield schemer had another quiet afternoon, but was still Town's primary driving force at the heart of midfield, as a succession of second-half piledrivers testified. 6

Barnsley (2) v Huddersfield Town (1) pre season friendly - Jacob Butterfield.

Dempsey - Will be devastated to have made such an error at a key stage of the match, particularly after doing excellently in the build-up to Wells' goal and his withdrawal at half-time may not have helped matters. 6

Miller - Struggled to make enough of a case for a starting place next week and that was definitely due to a lack of match practice. There were glimpses of his talent on the ball and powerful running, but he looked short of full fitness. 6

Wells - The only Town player to emerge with any real credit after some selfless running, strong hold-up play and an excellently-taken goal. He had the home defence scared all afternoon until coming off. 7

Substitutes:

Hogg - Helped steady things in midfield and linked up neatly with Whitehead with some clever passing. 6

Barnsley (2) v Huddersfield Town (1) pre season friendly - Jonathan Hogg.

Lolley - Could not really get into the game after his introduction and will be disappointed not to have contributed more. 5

Vaughan - Barely got a kick as Barnsley held on with relative ease as Town's two-man attack floundered. 5

Hiwula - Plenty of valiant running, but did not always have the end product to match. 5

Cranie - Booked almost immediately after coming on as a substitute but was solid thereafter. 6

Bunn - Hardly any time to make an impact. 5
