Huddersfield Town suffered late West Yorkshire derby heartache as Billy Sharp netted a late winner in a 2-1 defeat to Leeds United.

The Terriers had trailed as early as the seventh minute as Sam Byram cashed in on a combination of clever play from Luke Murphy and slack defending from Jack Robinson, but it didn't take long for Town to pull level.

Jacob Butterfield's right-wing corner was met at the back post by Harry Bunn, who nodded home the leveller and Sean Scannell screwed an effort wide as Chris Powell's side looked to take control.

The second half was a scrappy affair and, when substitute Mirco Antenucci blazed over late on, it looked like it would finish all square until Sharp popped up to head home the Italian's right-wing cross to leave Town empty-handed and saw both Nahki Wells and Tommy Smith suffer nasty injuries.

But how did each Town player rank in the narrow derby defeat?

In pictures: Huddersfield Town 1-2 Leeds United

Murphy - This was his chance to show why he has what it takes to move ahead of the ill Alex Smithies in the pecking order, but he failed to grasp the opportunity. Looked shaky throughout with his handling and kicking and was caught out badly for Byram's opener. 5.

Smith - Solid as ever and grew in confidence during the second half before that nasty injury cruelly struck. Defended well on the whole and forced Alex Mowatt to come inside. 6.

Hudson - Strong defensively for the most part and he was one of few Town players to win his battle against the isolated Steve Morison, but he spoiled all his good work with a poor piece of defending for Sharp's winner. 5.

Lynch - Difficult to pick anyone who truly stood out, but Lynch at least showed the battling qualities his teammates failed to throughout the contest, even if he was positionally at fault for the opening goal. 6.

Robinson - His encouraging recent form took a dip here as both goals came down his flank and he was particularly susceptible for Byram's strike as he let the wideman come in off the touchline without tracking the run. 5.

Butterfield - One of Town's most gifted players but he was unable to exert his usual influence on the game, bar his dancing run through the Leeds defence before firing across goal in the second period and an assist for Bunn. Needed to simplify things. 6.

Edgar - Had a debut to remember at Wigan but this, sadly, was a regrettable home debut for the Birmingham City loanee, who appeared unfit and therefore struggled to stem the Leeds midfield tide. Looked nervous on the ball and regularly caught out of position. 4.

Coady - Fought hard for the cause but did not show enough quality on the ball to suggest he could find the killer pass or get Town into any sort of rhythm in possession. Didn't get close enough, either, to the influential Murphy. 6.

Scannell - Was relied upon to provide the cutting edge down the right but his final ball was lacking and he squandered a gilt-edged chance to hand Town what would have been a crucial lead. Worked hard, however, up and down his wing. 6.

Vaughan - A lonely battle for the frontman after Wells had gone off injured and he was wasteful with the ball when he did get it. Fed off scraps, but had to do more to protect possession for his side. 5.

Wells - Substituted after just 10 minutes after falling in a heap as he looked to run in behind. 5.

Substitutes:

Bunn - Took his goal well with a deft header from a Butterfield corner but was unable to get the better of his marker Scott Wootton and became a frustrated figure out on the left wing. 6.

Wallace - Came on for the injured Lynch to try and keep out Leeds' late wave of attacks but may feel he could have done better with Sharp's late matchwinner. 5.

Lolley - Barely got a touch after coming on for the final stages. 5.
