Huddersfield Town's stop-start beginning to 2015 continued with a disappointing 4-1 home defeat to a clinical Wolves side as Chris Powell's men were made to pay for poor finishing and defending.

Nouha Dicko got the ball rolling for the visitors after just 12 minutes by slotting in from Rajiv van La Parra's sliderule pass and Conor Coady's own-goal just 56 seconds after the break gave Town an uphill battle.

Former loan striker Benik Afobe ended it as a contest with a well-taken third for Wolves but James Vaughan replied instantly by sweeping home a Sean Scannell cut-back.

Town looked for the crucial next goal but it was not forthcoming and Dicko rubbed salt in the wounds with a late fourth for Wolves in stoppage time.

But how did each Town player rank in the comprehensive defeat?

In pictures: Huddersfield Town 1-4 Wolves

Smithies - Was left horribly exposed for each of the Wolves goals and was unable to truly make any saves of note, with Wolves clinical whenever they came forward. His distribution of the ball was much improved but he could do little to impact on the game. 6.

Smith - Played in more of a conventional right-back role and rarely came close to stopping the dangerous Bakary Sako, who showed him a clean pair of heels on a number of occasions. His forward forays in the opening half were a highlight, but it has to be factored in that this was his first appearance since that horror injury. 6.

Hudson - The Town captain impressed at Millwall at the weekend and, while he was not entirely faultless here, he actually won a number of the lofted balls forward and one crunching tackle on goalscorer Afobe pleased supporters. 6.

Wallace - Could not get to grips with the sheer pace and movement of Wolves' speedy frontline and his positioning was called into question most pertinently when Dicko ran between him and Hudson to make it 1-0. Struggled when playing out from the back at times too. 5.

Robinson - Was not offered enough protection from players in front of him but looked a shadow of the player whose improvement in recent weeks has been one of the highlights of some of Town's recent good results and did not know which Wolves player to mark due to their regular interchanging. 6.

Scannell - Town's best player on the night and even though he may not have got the better of young Kortney Hause on each occasion, he brought the Terriers further up the field and the direct run and cutback for Vaughan's goal were superb. 7.

Butterfield - Not one of his better games but he kept plugging away, trying desperately to engineer space in a midfield where Town were swarmed over by Kevin McDonald and Jack Price for a ball through to the forwards but could be accused of doing too much on occasion. 6.

Coady - He enjoyed one of his best performances for Town in the reverse fixture and he very rarely has a bad outing, but this was certainly one of them as he failed to offer enough protection to the back four and then headed inadvertently into his own net to give Town a mountain to climb. 5.

Bunn - Plenty of industry but not enough end product from the wideman, who looked a frustrated figure as he was replaced midway through the second half, although he did not always provide Robinson with the required tracking-back against the tricky van La Parra. 6.

Vaughan - Coming back to his form slowly but surely and he showed some neat touches here, as well as applying a brilliant swept finish to Scannell's cut-back for Town's solitary goal of the contest. 6.

Miller - Looked slightly rusty on his full debut for the club and was bullied in the air by the dominant duo of Richard Stearman and Danny Batth, but it is to be remembered that he is still bedding his way in at Town and will require game-time to prove his worth to Town. 5.

Substitutes:

Lolley - Given a slightly longer cameo to try and change things but these were difficult circumstances to arrive at and he struggled as a result. 5.

Edgar - Barely had a kick of the ball after replacing Wallace late on. 5.
