Huddersfield Town fell to a 4-3 defeat in a thriller at Rochdale as they were made to pay for some slack first-half defending.

The hosts raced into a two-goal lead through Calvin Andrew and Lewis Alessandra, before Nahki Wells pulled one back with a superb free-kick, only for Callum Camps to go one better with a stunning long-range drive to make it 3-1.

Sean Scannell hit straight back with a powerful finish at the back post, only for Camps to score his second just before the break and despite Wells' clever finish at the start of the second period, Town were left with too much to do as the Bermudian and Joe Lolley missed chances for the leveller.

But how did each Town player rank in their Spotland setback?

Smithies - Was left terribly exposed by a woeful defensive display in the first half but there were possible question marks about his positioning on the first goal. Improved in the second half before being clattered by substitute Nyal Bell. 6

Cranie - The best of a bad bunch at the back for Town, showing impressive speed across the ground to track runners and a surprising inclination to get forward and join in with the attack. 6

Hudson - Failed to show enough conviction in dealing with the second or fourth goals of the afternoon, with Camps' second illustrating some miscommunication and it summed up a sluggish half by his standards. 5

Lynch - Not the central defender's best afternoon, but he did improve as the game wore on, like the rest of his side. Was culpable for both the first and fourth goals and his late tackle on Dale central defender Kisimba Kisimba did not please the home faithful. 5

Smith - Does not look entirely comfortable on the left-hand side of defence and will hope he is able to resume duties on the opposite flank when Jason Davidson returns. Was given a testing time by the lively Camps. 5

Whitehead - Good use of the ball and although he was at fault for one of the Rochdale goals, he showed intelligence and discipline after the break to keep compact in midfield and close off spaces in front of the defence. 6

Butterfield - The standout player by some distance once more and looks to be warming up nicely ahead of the new season having displayed his usual vast array of passes and a tenacity which some of his teammates lacked early on. 8

Scannell - Took his goal well and was typically busy down the right but was not always clinical enough in the final third once he had beaten his marker, which he did regularly with trickery and pace. 6

Lolley - Did not impress as much as he did at Grimsby but was certainly not the worst performer on show. Gave the ball away too much but his constant probing and attempts to get at the home defence was admirable. Unlucky not to score. 6

Bunn - Industrious as always and played a key role in the opening goal but suffered a similar fate to Scannell in that he could not supply the end ball his dangerous runs beforehand had deserved. 6

Wells - Can feel slightly hard done by not to win the man-of-the-match honours and, but for Butterfield, he would have done. Took his goals neatly and was a constant menace by playing on the shoulder but squandered a great second-half opening. 7

Substitutes:

Hiwula - Some good elements to his play with some clever running but his link-up play needs some polishing. 5

Wallace - Had little to do from a defensive point of view but one second-half surge upfield which saw him beat three Rochdale players caught the eye. 6

Dempsey - The most impressive of the substitutes as he combined clever passing with direct running and a pugnacious side which dovetailed nicely with Butterfield. Teed up Wells for his late chance with a sliderule pass. 6

Hammill - A few flashes of his ability out on the left flank but he had little time to make an impact. 5

Hogg - Only on for a few minutes and only got a few touches of the ball. 5
