Premier League referee Stuart Attwell will be in the middle when Huddersfield Town host Rotherham United on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old from Nuneaton was in charge of Wednesday’s English Football League Cup third-round tie between Northampton Town and Manchester United.

It will be a third Championship appointment of the season for Attwell, who returned to the Select Group of referees this year after a previous spell from 2008-12.

Having become the youngest Premier League referee (he was 25 when he took charge of Blackburn Rovers versus Hull City in August 2008) Attwell was demoted from the Select Group by mutual consent.

He and an assistant referee Nigel Bannister had gained notoriety for awarding award a 'ghost goal' to Reading in a Championship game at Watford in September 2008 (Bannister mistakenly flagged for a goal instead of a corner kick).

At the time of Attwell’s demotion, Professional Game Match Officials Limited general manager Mike Riley said: “Throughout his career in the Select Group Stuart has demonstrated great courage and mental strength in responding to the challenges that he has faced.

“Stuart has a high level of maturity and responsibility and I’m convinced that he has a long-term future as a referee at the very highest level.

“PGMOL sincerely hope to be welcoming Stuart back to the Select Group in the future.”

Attwell, whose first Football League appointment was for Rotherham’s League Two game at Hereford United in August 2007, referee last season’s League One play-off final between Barnsley and Millwall.

His last Town game was the 2-1 Championship win at Reading in August 2014.
