Huddersfield Town have been warned that Sam Vokes is targeting a first career goal against them at the John Smith’s Stadium to help keep Burnley powering along at the top of the Championship.

The Wales international striker scored his 10th of the season from the penalty spot as Sean Dyche’s side drew 1-1 at Nottingham Forest last time out.

Vokes, who has formed a dangerous partnership with 14-goal Danny Ings, needs just three more for his half century at club level.

But the 24-year-old has yet to count against Town, having faced them for first club Bournemouth as well as Leeds, during a loan spell from Wolves, and Burnley.

Southampton-born Vokes, who has scored five times in 30 games for Wales, told the Burnley Express: “It’s good to get the goals and keep the confidence going.

“As a striker, you always set the target of double figures. If you get there, you then want to chip in with a few more.”

Vokes also had loan spells at Brighton, Burnley, Norwich, Sheffield United and Bristol City before making his move to Turf Moor permanent in 2012.

Like Town’s Adam Hammill, he was unable to tie down a regular place at Wolves, but has been a regular for Burnley, who are unbeaten in 12 league games.

He’s enjoying life at the top of the table, and added: “It’s good to look at the table at the moment, but we know there’s a long way to go.

“In previous times, maybe be would have buckled and lost games like the one at Forest, but we kept going and got the point.

“We pride ourselves on staying strong, and before the game, we spoke about putting down a marker to the rest of the league. We have to be happy with a point at a place like that, but we have to keep it going, and we know we are in for a tough game at Huddersfield.”

Eddie Ilderton, from Tyne and Wear, will referee Saturday’s game, his 14th of the season and third in the Championship.

County Durham’s Geoff Eltringham will be in charge of Tuesday’s match at Bolton.
