STEVE YATES had one word for the result at Bristol City: "Gobsmacking."

The 34-year-old centre-back could not believe Town conceded three goals after defending so well.

Yates played alongside David Mirfin and sweeper Nathan Clarke - in for the suspended Efe Sodje - against inconsistent City.

They restricted the home side to a Scott Murray header until Leroy Lita's late penalty and a deflected strike by Luke Wilkshire.

"We have such great characters and great team spirit and we were determined to do well," said Yates.

"The previous match against Barnsley we felt we let the fans down and we wanted to make up for that.

"Those who travelled saw a great performance in the first half and a dogged one in the second, and we didn't win it because of a bad decision and a little bit of bad luck.

"The penalty is one of the most dodgy I've ever seen, while the deflected goal was tough on Dave Mirfin. He was magnificent and he's made a great block on the lad, but the ball has flown off him and into the top corner of the net.

"We defended superbly with some great headers and blocks and to have conceded three goals is just gobsmacking really. It hurts a lot."

On the LDV, Yates added: "We owe the non-League one really after last season's FA Cup defeat and we have to realise Morecambe will be tough."
